The Ides of March

As an African American writer, I have always been interested in the stories and traditions of different cultures. But there is one holiday that has always puzzled me, and that is the Ides of March.

For those who might not know, the Ides of March is a day that holds a special significance in Roman mythology. It’s the day that Julius Caesar was assassinated, and it’s said to be a day of bad luck and ill omens.

As a kid, I remember hearing about the Ides of March but not really understanding its significance. It seemed like a strange and arbitrary holiday, and I couldn’t quite wrap my head around why anyone would want to celebrate (or not celebrate) it.

But as I’ve gotten older and learned more about Roman history and mythology, I’ve come to appreciate the importance of the Ides of March. It’s a reminder of the power of storytelling and the enduring legacy of the past.

So here’s to the Ides of March, and all the strange and wonderful holidays and traditions that make up the tapestry of human history. May we continue to learn and grow from the stories of the past, and create new ones of our own.

Let’s go Tar Heels!

The NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament is always filled with excitement and unpredictability, and it’s always fun to see which teams will rise to the occasion and make a deep run.

This year, I am predicting that the University of North Carolina will make it to the Sweet Sixteen again. The Tar Heels have a strong tradition of success in the NCAA Tournament, with 34 appearances in the Sweet Sixteen, and I believe they have the talent and coaching to make another run this year.

I know that anything can happen in March Madness, and there are always upsets and surprises along the way. But I have a feeling that the Tar Heels will be one of the teams to watch this year.

So here’s to March Madness, and all the exciting basketball that it brings. I can’t wait to see which teams will make it to the Sweet Sixteen and beyond!

Oreo Day?!

Growing up poor, there were many things that I couldn’t afford or didn’t have access to. Simple pleasures like a bag of chips or a box of cookies seemed out of reach, and I often had to make do with whatever we had in the pantry.

But as I’ve gotten older and started to make a decent living as a writer, I’ve been able to indulge in some of those small luxuries that I missed out on as a kid. And today, as I sit down to write this blog post, I am doing so with a package of Oreos by my side – because today is Oreo Day!

That’s right, the beloved cookie has its own day of celebration, and I couldn’t be more excited to join in the festivities. Whether I’m twisting, licking, and dunking them in milk or getting creative with recipes like Oreo balls or no-bake cheesecakes, there’s no wrong way to enjoy an Oreo.

So here’s to Oreo Day, and all the simple pleasures that make life a little sweeter. Whether it’s a cookie or something else, I hope you find a way to indulge in something that brings you joy today.

March Madness

As an African American writer and avid sports fan, there is one time of year that I always look forward to: March Madness.

For those who might not be familiar, March Madness is the annual NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament, a single-elimination tournament featuring 68 teams from across the country. It’s a time of excitement and unpredictability, where underdogs can rise to the occasion and Cinderella stories become a reality.

I love the energy and excitement of March Madness, and the way it brings together fans from all walks of life. Whether you’re a die-hard basketball fan or just enjoy the thrill of the tournament, there’s something special about this time of year.

So here’s to March Madness, and all the sports that bring us together and bring out our competitive spirits. May the best team win!

First Time Sledding

As a kid growing up, there were many things I wished I could do but didn’t have the money for. Sledding was one of those things.

Growing up in a low-income household, my parents couldn’t afford to buy me the warm winter gear or the sleds that many of my classmates had. So, I resigned myself to watching from the sidelines as I heard about the trips from friends in more affluent neighborhoods.

But this year, something changed. As an adult, I finally had the means to buy myself a sled and the warm gear I needed to stay comfortable in the cold. And so, on a whim, I decided to give sledding a try.

I have to admit, I was a little nervous as I made my way up the hill. It had been so long since I’d last done this, and I wasn’t sure I remembered how. But as I sat down on the sled and pushed off, something magical happened.

The wind rushed through my hair and the cold stung my cheeks as I flew down the hill, my laughter mixing with the sound of the sled cutting through the snow. It was a feeling of pure joy and freedom, and I couldn’t stop grinning from ear to ear.

As an African American writer, I am grateful for the opportunity to experience new things and make up for lost time. And while sledding might seem like a small and insignificant thing to some, it was a moment of pure happiness and childhood delight that I will always treasure.
