As an African American writer, I am always fascinated by the various holidays and special days that seem to pop up out of nowhere. But even I have to admit, I was a little confused when I heard that there was a national day dedicated to grilled cheese sandwiches.
I mean, don’t get me wrong – I love a good grilled cheese as much as the next person. But a whole day devoted to it? It seemed a little… well, cheesy. (Pun intended.)
But as I started to think about it, I realized that there was something kind of special about having a day dedicated to this humble and beloved sandwich. After all, grilled cheese has a way of bringing people together and evoking feelings of comfort and nostalgia. Whether you’re a kid eating it in your school cafeteria or an adult indulging in a late-night snack, there’s something undeniably appealing about the simple combination of bread and cheese.
So here’s to National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day, and all the simple pleasures that bring us joy. Whether it’s a sandwich or something else, I hope you find a way to celebrate and enjoy the little things in life today.
